When we read the story of David’s rise to the throne, we might expect something like a clean transfer of power, a heroic coronation, and a righteous king ruling a grateful people. Instead, what we find is something far more human, and far more messy. The story we come across in 2 Samuel 2:12-3:39 is a messy one, and it’s the story of our world and of our lives.
